what is oud?
Oud is one of the most expensive substances in the world even pricier than gold, with some types costing up to $100,000 per kilo. It comes from the Aquilaria tree, found only in Southeast Asia.
The tree produces oud resin only when it’s infected by a specific fungus. This resin is then distilled and used in perfumery. The wood is also known as agarwood and can be burned as incense or used for furniture.
Oud has been valued for centuries, but sustainable practices for harvesting it in perfumery are a more recent development.
what’s the difference between synthetic and real oud?
Synthetic oud is made in a lab to mimic the scent of real oud. Most perfume brands choose this option because working with real oud comes with several challenges:
It’s extremely expensive - not just the oud itself, but also the production and finding partners willing to work with it.
It’s hard to source and often limited in supply.
Importing it can be complicated, as it’s a highly regulated and precious material.
There’s also a noticeable difference in scent. Like the difference between synthetic rose oil and pure rose oil, real oud smells more natural, earthy, and powerful - rich with depth and character that synthetics can’t fully match.
where does strangelove source its oud?
We currently source our oud from Laos, which is known for producing the highest quality oud in Southeast Asia.
Not all oud is created equal. Ours comes from Laos, where oud is grown and harvested sustainably and where the resin is allowed to form slowly and properly in the wood, which is what gives it its depth. Connoisseurs call Laotian oud the gentleman’s oud, and once you smell it you understand why. Where other ouds shout, this one speaks in a low voice: smooth and deeply woody, faintly sweet with honey and dried fruit, warm and almost creamy, with none of the harsh medicinal or barnyard edge that has given oud its reputation. It's the most refined expression of the material, distilled slowly in the traditional way and aged until the resin turns rich and ambered. We use it because it doesn’t fight for space, the vanilla or the sandalwood around it. It holds everything together from beneath, the way a great oud should.
Elizabeth first began working with oud in the early 2000s, after a trip to Borneo where she was invited to help promote sustainable ingredients. Over time, we’ve explored many types of oud, but Laos oud has proven to be the perfect match for the Strangelove collection.
